Wrap-Up From January Workshop

BIO:
A Connecticut Yankee transplanted to Central Florida, Debra Jess writes science fiction romance, science fantasy, superheroes, and urban fantasy. She began writing in 2006, combining her love of fairy tales and Star Wars to craft original stories of ordinary people in extraordinary adventures and fantastical creatures in out-of-this world escapades. You can find links to her award-winning paranormal and science fiction romances at DebraJess.com. When she’s not writing, Debra happily plays fur mommy to Martin, the vampire kitty, and Lily, the tiger kitty. You can follow her adventures with Martin and Lily on social media, or you can subscribe to her newsletter: https://eepurl.com/boYZKL

WORKSHOPS:
Genre Building: Reining in Your Plot, World, and Creativity

Have writer’s block? Not sure where to start? Not sure of what happens next? Suffering from a sagging middle? Are your characters ignoring you or going off in different directions? It’s time to return to the basics rein in your plot, your world, and your creativity.

Part I: Goal, Motivation, and Conflict Exercise: This is the technique taught to me by D.C. Black, a former Hollywood writer who worked on shows such as Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Bring paper and pens (or other device) so we can work on your stories together.

Part II: Structure: How do you connect the dots between your scenes? How do you call back to an element of the story that you mentioned in chapter one. How do you reach the black moment when all is lost and hopeless, only to have your characters pull themselves out and rise above it all at the end.

Note: It helps (but isn’t necessary) if the attendees have at least a passing familiarity with the following movies: Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home, Star Wars: A New Hope, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Thomas Crowne Affair (1999 with Pierce Brosan), and The Wizard of Oz.
