Spring is Sprung With Spring Break and St Patricks Day

Spring is Sprung With Spring Break and St Patrick’s Day.

Greener on This Side: Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the US Every March 17th, the US transforms into an emerald isle for a day! St. Patrick’s Day, a celebration of Irish heritage and culture, is a bigger deal here than you might think. Sure, it’s not an official federal holiday (except in a few places like Savannah, Georgia), but that doesn’t stop the festivities. Here’s what makes St. Patrick’s Day special in the United States:

A Rich History: Irish immigrants began celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the colonies as early as the 1600s. The first parade is believed to have taken place in New York City in 1762! Green Everything: Shamrocks, leprechauns, and the color green take center stage. From rivers dyed green (Chicago!) to green bagels and beer, it’s a day to embrace the emerald hue.

Parades Galore: Cities across the US hold massive St. Patrick’s Day parades. Floats, marching bands, and people decked out in green create a vibrant atmosphere.

Food and Fun: Irish pubs are packed, with people enjoying traditional dishes like corned beef and cabbage and raising a pint of Guinness. Traditional Irish music and dance add to the festive spirit.

Interestingly, many of the iconic St. Patrick’s Day symbols we know today, like leprechauns and green clothing, were actually popularized in the US! So, while Ireland celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with religious observances and cultural events, the US version has become a unique blend of tradition and lighthearted revelry.

So, if you find yourself in the US on March 17th, don a touch of green, grab a pint, and join the celebration!

Spring Break For Writers

While you are taking a break for these many holidays coming up why not take a little break and use the following to clean out your writing juices.

Spark your creativity with some fun writing exercises! Try a six-word story, a scene written entirely in dialogue, or describe an object in detail without ever mentioning its name. Play with genre by writing a detective story about a missing sock, or a love letter from a grumpy houseplant. Let a random image online inspire a scene, or shuffle your music player and write a story based on the first song that comes on. Don’t be afraid to be silly, and remember, the most important thing is to just start writing and see where your imagination takes you!
