Join us Saturday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. for virtual workshops involving behind-the-scenes medical secrets and discussions of obstetric emergencies. Our presenter, award-winning author Jillian David, is an expert. She juggles a busy rural medical practice while still finding time to write stories of steamy misadventure … that always contain a few medical twists.
About the Workshops:
Part 1: Medicine, Manuscripts, and Mayhem!
Medical situations can make fiction more dramatic and can hook readers – just ask fans of General Hospital, the longest-running soap opera in American history! By using accurate medical details, characters, and scenarios, you can improve the believability of your book and rivet readers.
Participants will review background requirements for typical medical training and discuss urban versus rural practices – helpful when writing about small town settings! Participants will learn how to use “three truths and a lie” with medical details to stretch the believability of your story. We will touch on population/racial health disparities found in the US. There will be discussions about common emergency scenarios.
Bonus session: Use your stethoscope as a nunchuck. (just kidding) (not really)
Part 2: Everything Obstetric
First comes love, second comes … well, it’s complicated, when it comes to pregnancy in romance novels! Sometimes there’s a secret baby, or I-didn’t-know-I-was-pregnant, or a pregnant virgin’s baby. The romance genre and pregnancy drama go hand-in-hand. But when push comes to shove, it’s important to get the details right when creating your book baby!
In this workshop, participants will review how one can – and cannot – become pregnant. We’ll discuss how to use common pregnancy and delivery complications to add realistic drama to a manuscript.
Bonus session: How to deliver a baby in the rain forest with only a Navy SEAL, a shoelace, and a lead pencil – all while on the run from the local drug cartel.

About Jillian:
Award-winning author Jillian David lives near the end of the Earth with her nut of a husband and her bossy cats. To escape the sometimes-stressful world of the rural physician, she edits while on call and writes books in her free time. She enjoys taking realistic settings and adding a twist of “what if.”
Her book credits include a paranormal romance series, Hell to Pay, which involves characters selling their souls to Satan and then having a devil of a steamy time getting out of the contracts.
